Where is gold found in Kenya? Migori, Kapenguria and Turkana compared
27 Oct 2026 · Aurelot
Kenya's gold story has long been told through artisanal miners, but the country is drawing more formal investment, and the government has been moving to open new ground to licensed mining. So where is gold found in Kenya? Most gold deposits in Kenya sit in the west of the country, and for investors three gold mining areas stand out: Migori in the south-west, and Kapenguria (West Pokot) and Turkana in the north-west. They are very different places to invest.
This overview is general background, not a geological report or investment advice.
Migori: the established gold belt
What is there. Migori County sits on a greenstone belt that is part of the wider Lake Victoria goldfields, the same broad geological setting as Tanzania's major gold mines to the south. Gold occurs mainly in quartz veins and reefs, and there is a long history of mining, including the historic Macalder copper-gold mine and many small-scale workings around areas such as Osiri and Masara.
What it suits. Small and medium plots with existing shafts or reef exposures, tailings retreatment, and joint ventures with established local miners. Infrastructure is the best of the three regions: roads, power lines and towns are close to most workings.
What to watch. Land ownership disputes have been common in Migori's gold areas, including high-profile conflicts over sales and leases of mining ground. A thorough land search and clear community agreements are essential. Many plots also carry existing artisanal miners, who need to be part of any plan.
Kapenguria and West Pokot: rivers, ridges and new licences
What is there. West Pokot has alluvial gold in its river systems and hard-rock potential in the hills. Local miners pan and wash river gravels, and prospecting licence applications covering large areas of the county have been gazetted, a sign of growing exploration interest.
What it suits. Alluvial (river gravel) projects that can use wash plants, and earlier-stage exploration ground for investors comfortable with risk and longer timelines.
What to watch. Much of the land is community land, so community consent and benefit-sharing are central. Alluvial grades are measured in grams per cubic metre of gravel, not grams per tonne, so compare them carefully (we explain this in Gold grades explained). Access roads can be seasonal.
Turkana: the frontier
What is there. Turkana has seen artisanal gold rushes at sites such as Lomeguro, Kalomwae and Naduat, and the government has been moving to open large areas of Turkana and West Pokot to licensed gold mining.
What it suits. Large exploration blocks and alluvial flats, often offered for sale, lease or farm-in, for investors who can fund systematic exploration.
What to watch. It is remote, hot and dry, with limited infrastructure, so operating costs are higher. Licensing in Turkana has been politically sensitive, with disputes over who gets licences and fears that artisanal miners will be pushed out. Strong community relations and clean licensing are not optional here.

Questions to ask in any region
- Is there a valid mineral right, and does it cover the whole plot?
- Who is mining on the ground today, and what agreements exist with them?
- What do the lab certificates show, and were the samples representative?
- How far is the nearest all-weather road, power and water?
- Has the community been consulted, and is consent documented?
